a5c7b9f00b The year is 1805. Europe has fallen to Napoleon, and only the Royal Navy stands in his way to total victory. Off the cost of South America, a new conflict is brewing. Captain Jack "Lucky Jack" Aubrey of the Man-of-War HMS Surprise is under orders to sink or capture the French privateer Acheron, which has been deployed to the region. After seven weeks of uneventful sailing, the Acheron strikes first, all but crippling the Surprise in an engagement in which Aubrey realizes his enemy's ship is nautically superior to his own. Along with his close friend and confidant Stephan Maturin who also happens to be the ship's surgeon, Aubrey is now faced with the choice of retreating to England and admitting defeat or remaining at the Acheron's mercy. Aubrey must now do the impossible if he is to survive, repair his ship, catch up to his enemy and defeat the Acheron–somehow.

This task will be a difficult oneAubrey quickly learns in an initial battle with the Acheron that it is a bigger and faster ship than the Surprise, which puts the Surprise at a disadvantage. Aubrey's single-mindedness in this seemingly impossible pursuit puts him at odds with the Surprise's doctor and naturalist, Stephen Maturin, who is also Aubrey's most trusted advisor on board and closest friend. Facing other internal obstacles which have resulted in what they consider a string of bad luck, Aubrey ultimately uses Maturin's scientific exploits to figure out a way to achieve his and the ship's seemingly impossible goal.
In the words of Homer Simpson: " Bbbbbbbooooooooorrrrrriiiiiiing!!!!" The reviews and trailer of this film led me terribly astray. I was so excited to see this one. How disappointed I was, then, when I had to sit through 2.5 hours of a misguided, confused film full of Hollywood cliches. What a waste.
I found this film quite refreshing in this day of over the top action and in your face dazzle. <br/><br/>This a timeless film that will appeal to broad audiences of all ages and it will not be subject to fads or popular notions. It could have been released 50 years ago and we would still accept it todayit will be tomorrow.<br/><br/>There were no sex scenes, no memorable special effects, no surprise plot twists, and no unrealisticly choreographed fight scenes. This is a film that holds its own by pulling you into its atmosphere with masterfully developed characters, beautiful photography, fantastic ship battles, good score, and surprisingly fine acting. <br/><br/>You'll really feel like your with the crew, and you'll really care about what happens to them. Crowe does an admirable job in portraying his qualitiesa leader of men; true to his duty, courageous and tough, but not without weakness, humor or feelings. His on board friend the naturalist doctor is his excellent opposite, intellectual, bookish, and with an obvious impatience for unquestioned authority or the crown's less than humanitarian methods of punishment. His influence has a deep effect on our determined captain who comes to question his own ambitions verses his duty in protecting his men from undue danger.<br/><br/>The danger is the sea, the weather, and the mysterious French frigate which is playing a cat and mouse game with our British mates. The enemy is never shown clearly, but we know they are clever, have more men, more guns, a thicker hull, and a captain who is possibly of the same determinationour hero captain. <br/><br/>I found the relationship between the men, some of which are young lads barely in their teens quite convincing. Good camaraderie and a cemented loyalty under duress, but still fallibleall of us are. <br/><br/>All in all a good solid seafaring story with authentic details and likable characters. The audio effects are sensational. By all means pump up the surround sound on this one lads!
The director of "Gallipoli" and "The Year of Living Dangerously" has muffled the rage and darkness of his best work in favor of an antiquated pleasingness. Master and Commander is a too-comfy classic.
